OLYMPIC GAMES INFORMATION PAVILION

The project´s base concept s are dynamism and movement that are both dominant aspects of the Olympic Games. Throughout the competitions, the athletes are forced to their limits to transpose obstacles and go beyond. The definition of movement is the variation of position by an object or material point in space and time, with this argument, the project explore many types of movements considering the time factor as well. By this way, the proposal results intends to translate the dynamism contained in the Olympic Games by the use of light as a dominant aspect as well as the possibility to modify the pavilion form through the opening of architectural parts, both aspects are best explained ahead in this document.

LIGHT MOVEMENT

The light represents the ephemeral, the transitory as well as the Olympic Games that occurs every four years in people´s lives and creates expectations and anxieties for it to come. Despite of the fact that the light don´t exist physically, it´s presence is felted and noticed as the Olympic spirit. The project has many lightning spots, that basically serve for two functions: first, as a framework to point for the tourist some important elements of the surroundings by night; secondly, the sun light is always in movement and changes during the day, as it get in the building through the openings, it will create a new appearance each time and its reflection on the ground will change constantly as well. This way, the nature, as an unexpected element, intervenes and becomes the building´s co-author. By night, the same lightning spots work with a reverse function: instead of allowing the invasion of the daylight inside the building, they will diffuse an artificial light working sort as a lighthouse indicating its position with the light beam emanating.

MOVEMENT TO CREATE NEW SPACES

Other important aspect of the project, are the moving parts that compose the building. These elements, when moved, change their architectural functions, for example (det.01): a part that primarily is a wall becomes a door, allowing people´s entrance and passage through the Pavilion. The same modified element becomes a shelter from the sun or the rain.

PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT

The Pavilion is placed at a square´s nodal point which is the axis that leads Nelson´s Column to the National Gallery and the perpendicular axis that connects the two square´s sides. With the openings provided by the moving parts, the building allows a permeability of the space and free transit throughout it, people can freely go across the Café, information counter and souvenir store.     As the stairs, located in front of the National Gallery, is widely used as a bench and not only as a passage place, the proposition decided to allow the transit across the Café through the opening of moving parts located in both sides. By doing so, the view of the big screen (that will broadcast live games) located in front ofNelson’s Column will be allowed both for the peoplo inside the Café and the outside people seated on the stairs. It can be seen also from other spots of the Trafalgar Square.
